Amir Khan explains why Andy Ruiz rematch might be ‘WORST’ decision for Anthony Joshua

DON’T DO IT

Amir Khan has told talkSPORT he’s far from convinced that Anthony Joshua should rematch Andy Ruiz Jr next.

Britain’s unified heavyweight champion was dethroned by the plucky underdog challenger on Saturday night in New York, suffering his first defeat in the process.

It’s since been announced that Joshua intends to pursue an immediate second fight with Ruiz, and his team have already triggered the rematch clause.

Khan reacted to the fight by telling talkSPORT’s James Savundra: “Mentally I think he’ll be very strong, he’ll know how to overcome that.

“He got beat off a guy who he knows he can beat, obviously.

“I just don’t think it’s gonna be the best thing to do to take him on [again] straight away.

“I think have a rematch with him maybe one or two fights later, when he’s got his confidence back up again and got a good few knockouts under his belt.

“And then fight Ruiz for the second time. If he takes it too soon it could go all wrong again.

“So let’s hope it doesn’t go that way. We’re always in his corner, we’re always supporting him.

“Hopefully he can pull off that performance, beat him and win his titles back.”

Rival WBC heavyweight king Deontay Wilder believes Joshua won’t take the rematch, however it seems as though wheels are being set in motion for a second fight.

Later on, while speaking to a group of reporters including talkSPORT.com, Khan went one step further with his remarks and added: “I think it might be the worst thing to do.

“As a fighter, you’re always going to have that in the back of your mind, ‘He beat me last time.’”
