Arsenal looking at Adrien Rabiot for January loan in transfer window, but Mikel Arteta may wait on Granit

Adrien Rabiot is being lined up to replace Granit Xhaka if the midfielder decides to leave in January.

Any deal for the Juventus player, who joined the Italian side in the summer, would be on loan.

According to The Times, Juve want Rabiot to stay despite his five Serie A starts so far.

Rabiot came through the academy at Paris Saint-Germain, but his relationship with the club turned ugly and his attitude and professionalism were called into question towards the end of his time in France.

However, interest in him depends on Xhaka. New manager Mikel Arteta is a fan of the Arsenal player and even revealed he was on a list of recommended signings he handed over to Manchester City.

Arteta, appointed as Unai Emery’s successor last Friday, ended his playing career with the Gunners in 2016.

Xhaka moved from Borussia Monchengladbach to Arsenal for £35m that summer, but his Arsenal career appeared over when he swore at his own fans during a game against Crystal Palace earlier in the season.

“As a player, when I was going from Arsenal to City to start coaching and we were looking in that position, he was one of the players on my list,” Arteta explained.

“This is how much I liked him. I was happy when Arsenal signed him because I thought he was going to be a terrific player.

“He has done some really good things and now he has got stuck in a very difficult situation that, I think, was growing and growing and growing and one day it exploded.

“But I have been amazed as well by how this relationship is starting to come back a little bit and I think the fans have been very very positive about him, and him as well.

“Obviously it is difficult to change completely the scenario from where he was a magnificent one. But I think we are in the right direction with him.”

The manager confirmed he has spoken to Xhaka about his future.

“I told him how much I like him, what I expect from him and how important he is for the team,” he said.

“I am here to help him, I want him to feel that we are right behind him. Not just myself but the whole club. If we can get the fans on his side I think it will be helpful for the team, which is where it matters.”
