‘Celtic have shamed Scottish football, Rangers embarrassed them’ – Jason Cundy slams Bhoys after shock Europa

Celtic were branded a ‘shame on Scottish football’ after their shock Europa League exit at the hands of Copenhagen.

Despite heading into the match as favourites to reach the last 16 – having scored a vital away goal in last week’s first leg to secure a 1-1 draw – the Hoops were stunned at Parkhead.

Thursday’s clash appeared certain to go to extra time when Odsonne Edouard netted a penalty to make the tie 2-2 on aggregate, with his spot-kick cancelling out Michael Santos’ 51st minute opener.

His penalty hit the back of the net seven minutes from full-time, but there was still time for Neil Lennon’s side to suffer an embarrassing collapse – conceding TWO further goals in just a three minute spell.

Pep Biel and Dame N’Doye both fired past Fraser Forster to claim Copenhagen a 4-2 aggregate win and book their place in Friday’s round-of-16 draw.

Celtic’s defeat hurts the Parkhead faithful even more seeing as the club’s Old Firm rivals, Rangers, DID reach the next round.

The day before the Hoops’ embarrassing Europa League exit, Rangers won 1-0 in Braga to knock the Portuguese side out on aggregate.

It’s all smiles for Steven Gerrard and tears for Neil Lennon – and a scathing assessment of Celtic from talkSPORT’s very own Jason Cundy.

Cundy and his talkSPORT co-host Andy Goldstein came on air to present the Sports Bar immediately after the Hoops’ European exit was confirmed, and the former Chelsea defender laid into the Scottish champions.

“Rangers have embarrassed them,” began Cundy. “Celtic have shamed Scottish football!

“They went out 4-2 on aggregate!”

Goldstein even made Cundy repeat what he said just so he could write it down – so he never has to misquote his co-host’s scathing Celtic comments.

Lennon, the Celtic boss, admitted his frustration after the match, hitting out at his side for ‘shooting themselves in the foot’.

“It was an opportunity lost,” said Lennon. “Copenhagen didn’t have to work hard to get goals, that was so frustrating and not like us at all.

“I am hugely disappointed. We shot ourselves in the foot.

“We had total control of game in first half, I don’t remember Fraser Forster having anything to do of note.

“We hit the post and I was pretty pleased at half time and then we made mistakes and gave them oxygen and encouragement.

“We had to change the shape to get back into the game and deservedly got back in but we didn’t manage the game, we shot ourselves in foot for second goal and that was the big moment of the tie.

“Individual mistakes cost us and that’s the nuts and bolts of it.

“It was a great opportunity and we let it go. It was bitterly disappointing in the manner we lost.”
