Lionel Messi. Sometimes you just have to stand up and applaud.
And that’s exactly what Eibar did after the Barcelona maestro scored four goals against them on Saturday.
Messi’s latest masterclass helped his side to a 5-0 win which has moved them top of the LaLiga, with Real Madrid falling to a shock defeat at Levante later in the day to remain two points behind the leaders.
His first goal was vintage Messi, as he bamboozled three Eibar defenders before chipping the ball over goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic and into the back of the net.
Thibaut Courtois bizarrely pulls his hands away from shot to concede goal as Levante stun Real Madrid and ensure Barcelona stay top
The 32-year-old went on to complete his hat-trick before half-time and added another late on.
You’d think Eibar would be sick of the sight of Messi, given he has now scored 20 times against them and in 11 successive games.
But the lowly club, who are just outside the relegation zone, have nothing but praise for the man who continues to take no mercy against them.
They tweeted out a classy message about Messi after he downed them again on Saturday, which read: “We suffer you, we suffer from you, we cope with you. And we have no choice but to stand up and applaud you.”
Messi’s four-goal haul, meanwhile, saw him surpass Cristiano Ronaldo‘s total of 47 hat-tricks in his club career – he’s now on 48.
He is also now the first player to ever achieve over 1,000 total goal contributions, with his latest heroics taking him to 696 goals and 306 assists.
A remarkable record from a remarkable talent.
