The Toon’s club-record signing is dazzling for his country in the Copa America and played a pivotal role as his side frustrated the two-time World Cup winners to a 1-1 draw
Lionel Messi may be the greatest footballer to ever walk the earth, but it was Miguel Almiron who set the footballing world alight in last night’s Copa America clash between Argentina and Paraguay.
Newcastle’s club record signing is dazzling for his country and played a pivotal role as his side frustrated the two-time World Cup winners to a 1-1 draw.
The Group B clash was frankly a lacklustre encounter, but there was one piece of brilliance from Almiron which stood out.
The Magpies playmaker provided an assist in Paraguay’s opening match of the tournament against Qatar and it wasn’t long before he turned provider again in the match against Messi and Co.
The midfielder ran almost the length of the pitch, dancing through the challenges of several defenders before dispatching a perfect cross for Richard Sanchez to score.
Almiron was clearly still adapting to English football last term, but the signs are that he could be set for a brilliant season at Newcastle – and it’s safe to say Toon fans think they have a major superstar in their ranks.
