Paul Gascoigne has told boyhood club Newcastle United to ‘start giving Rafa Benitez money’ ahead of a crucial summer for the club.
Benitez is set for crunch talks with owner Mike Ashley in the coming weeks, with the Spaniard’s future in charge at St James’ Park still uncertain.
The Champions League-winning boss led the Magpies to a 13th-placed finish to the Premier League season, ending the campaign on a huge high with a 4-0 thumping of Fulham.
And Ashley was watching from the stands at Craven Cottage as the travelling Toon Army repeatedly called for Benitez to stay at their club.
Benitez has repeatedly said his decision to extend his contract will depend on Ashley’s vision for the club’s future, and whether he will be given funds to strengthen his squad in the transfer market.
The lack of resources made available to him by the millionaire owner has been a constant source of frustration for Benitez since he took the club back to the Premier League two seasons ago.
And Gazza insists it’s about time the much-loved boss is given the cash to compete.
“Rafa has been unbelievable,” the Newcastle legend said on Monday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.
“The good thing about being Newcastle manager is you know how faithful the fans are. They’ll always turn up, even if they get beat. They’re incredible.
“I’m not being funny, but Mike Ashley obviously isn’t short a few bob and they’ve got to start giving Rafa money.
“They’ve been saying it for years, but a massive club like that and an unbelievable manager like that, with what he’s achieved, you’ve got to give the guy money.
“Obviously he’s going to spend it wisely, he’s going to spent top class players.
“The money mike Ashley’s got, give me half and I’ll show him how to spend it!”
