Timo Werner says he is ‘very proud’ to be linked with a summer move to Liverpool – a team he has dubbed ‘the best in the world’.
His latest strike came in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Tottenham in the Champions League last-16 first leg clash.
After the game, Werner praised Liverpool when asked about his transfer links to the club, who are the Champions League holders and runaway Premier League leaders with a 22-point advantage over second-place Man City.
He told Norwegian outlet Viasport: “I know that Liverpool is the best team at the moment in the world.
“When you’re linked with that team it makes me very proud.
“It’s a pleasure but I know that Liverpool have a lot of good players and I have to improve myself, to learn much more things to get on this level to play there.”
It is understood that Liverpool are yet to make an approach for Werner, who has a reported £51million release clause in his RB Leipzig contract, which runs until 2023.
Earlier this month, the Germany international teased a future move to the Premier League.
He said: “I can generally imagine playing abroad one day, although I don’t have any specific club where I want to be.
“I am open for everything. I was over in America for a holiday recently and English football was on all of the time. That’s an exclamation mark for the Premier League.
“But there are also big, famous clubs and it would certainly be fun playing there.”
