RB Leipzig troll Tottenham with tweet showing incredible ten-year journey to Champions League knockout stages

RB Leipzig have taken to Twitter to illustrate their spectacular ten-year rise – but couldn’t resist a cheeky dig a Tottenham in the process.

The Bundesliga club travel to London on Wednesday night for their first ever Champions League knockout clash to continue their remarkable season.

Leipzig have come a long way since their humble beginnings

Leipzig have come a long way since their humble beginnings

Despite being in the fifth tier of German football just a decade ago, Leipzig are currently mounting a serious challenge for the Bundesliga title.

They sit just one point behind Bayern Munich, and they can hardly be considered underdogs against Spurs given the club’s injury woes.

Ahead of tonight’s match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Leipzig posted an image of where they were playing ten years ago next to tonight’s venue.

A post read: “What have you done in the last 10 years, @SpursOfficial?”

Leipzig are generally quite unpopular among German fans, who believe their cooperate model goes against everything the sport holds dear.

Erling Haaland is like Harry Kane… but he’s bigger, stronger and quicker – Tony Cascarino says 19-year-old striker is one of the best he’s ever seen

German football prides itself on fan power when it comes to its clubs, and Red Bull have been tearing up that proud tradition since it founded Leipzig in 2009.

In short, many in Germany feel that Leipzig’s rise isn’t something they should be so smug about.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans also felt disgruntled, seeing that in the last ten years they have actually reached the Champions League final and built the stadium which Leipzig are bragging about playing in.

But it was all a bit of fun – and Leipzig were disappointed nobody seemed to see the funny side.

They followed up their original tweet with the message: “Guess no one’s in a funny mood tonight…”
