Sam Allardyce reveals he tried to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for £60m at Everton before Arsenal transfer

Sam Allardyce has told talkSPORT he attempted to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during his spell as Everton boss after watching the striker score twice in Arsenal’s 3-2 win over the Toffees.

The Gabon international took his tally to 17 Premier League goals this season – level with Jamie Vardy as the division’s top scorer – with a clinical brace at the Emirates Stadium.

Aubameyang has been a huge hit since his arrival, but it appears Arsenal were not the first club keen on bringing the frontman to England – as Big Sam revealed on Monday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

Had they been successful, you’d imagine the Toffees – who instead completed deals for Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun for a combined £47m – would be in a much better place.

“I tried to buy him at Everton,” Allardyce told talkSPORT. “It was about £60m or £70m I think.

“We were searching for goals after [Romelu] Lukaku went and just wanted to test the waters.

“We spoke through his agent, and we had a shout that he was apparently desperate to get away from Germany and get into the Premier League.

“So we thought we’d have a dab, but we didn’t get very far to be fair.”

Allardyce remains a big fan of the prolific striker and urged Arsenal to do everything they can to tie him down to a new contract, as he enters the final year-and-a-half of his current deal.

There are big question marks over Aubameyang’s future at the Emirates Stadium due to his contract situation in north London.

The Gabon international was linked with a move to Barcelona last month, and though he stayed Mikel Arteta has admitted other big clubs will come calling and he could leave if the Gunners don’t qualify for the ‘biggest competitions’ and boost their squad by signing the ‘best players’.

That would suggest Aubameyang could depart in the summer transfer window after two-and-a-half years with Arsenal, in which he has so far scored 60 goals in just 95 appearances.

Allardyce added : “I’d be worried about losing him, really worried.

“I don’t know what Arsenal are going to do. They can’t afford to let another one run out his contract with his value.

Ray Parlour says Arsenal should let Aubameyang leave if he isn’t committed to the club

“He’s got 18 months left on his contract, so if he doesn’t sign a new deal this summer they’ll have to sell him.

“That would be a great shame for Arsenal fans and Arsenal, because what he’s done in goal terms has been absolutely miraculous.

“He is quality. He’s one of the few strikers who loves to run in behind, he doesn’t want to come to feet, he wants balls played down the channel, he gets on the end of it and slots them away.”
