The
49ers made a long-anticipated move at quarterback on Tuesday, though perhaps not the one you’re thinking of.
The team waived backup Josh Rosen, who had fallen to No. 4 in the pecking order without much opportunity to make up ground. Neither he nor Nate Sudfeld has taken a snap during 11-on-11 situations the last two days and Rosen, who played most of the second half in Saturday’s preseason opener against Kansas City, probably was going to hold a clipboard Sunday against the Chargers while Sudfeld worked with the third-string offense.
Through 15 training camp practices, Sudfeld is 32 of 50 (64 percent) in 11-on-11 situations while Rosen is 23 of 42 (54.8 percent), the lowest of the four 49ers quarterbacks. Against the Chiefs, he was 10 of 15 for 93 yards, including a red-zone interception on an overthrow to Travis Benjamin.
Jimmy Garoppolo has been getting nearly all of the first-team repetitions while the team also needs to give rookie Trey Lance as many snaps as possible. That’s left scant snaps for Rosen and Sudfeld, and Rosen admitted after Saturday’s game that it’s hard not to press when opportunities are so few.
“Sometimes if you’re in a competition you only get two or three throws a day,” he said.
