Trey Lance wasn’t active on Sunday night against the Indianapolis Colts. The San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback is still recovering from the knee sprain he suffered on October 10.

In the third quarter of Sunday’s game, with the 49ers trailing the Colts 20-12, we asked fans via Twitter who they want to see next weekend against the Chicago Bears, should the Niners fall to 2-4. They did, embarrassingly losing the game 30-18.

The vast majority of voters seem to be finished with Jimmy Garoppolo and want to see Lance get his second NFL start, assuming he is healthy.

Below are the poll results so far.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has been consistent in saying that a healthy Garoppolo would remain his starter. However, the 49ers have now lost four consecutive games, three of which Garoppolo started.

While Shanahan is not one to give in to public pressure, with the season seemingly spiraling out of control, it will be interesting to see if the 49ers coach changes his stance regarding the quarterback situation.

John Lynch evaluates 49ers rookie Trey Lance’s first start, explains Trey Sermon’s vanishing act

Trey Lance started his first NFL game this past weekend, replacing an injured Jimmy Garoppolo. The rookie quarterback’s performance had its ups and downs. Despite the defeat and the San Francisco 49ers falling to 2-3 on the season, the outing was an excellent opportunity for Lance to learn and gain valuable experience.

General manager John Lynch joined KNBR today. He offered an evaluation of Lance’s first start and didn’t feel the moment was too big for the 21-year-old.

“I think that was the case from the very first play,” Lynch said on the Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. “You know, welcome to the NFL. J.J. Watt and Chandler Jones blow by our offensive line on the first play, and Trey’s got enough athleticism and instinct to pull up and make an

Joe Staley: Jimmy Garoppolo will start, but 49ers are more exciting with Trey Lance

Former San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle, Joe Staley, went on KNBR Radio on Monday to discuss the 49ers’ loss to the Arizona Cardinals. As expected, the conversation went to the quarterback situation with Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, including who Staley believed would be under center in two weeks when the 49ers play the Indianapolis Colts.

“I think he made his decision before the season even started,” Staley said on the Papa & Lund show. “If Jimmy’s healthy, he’s going to be our quarterback this year. They want to use it as a red-shirt year, almost, for Trey this season. I was encouraged.”

That seemed to be the plan in the offseason, to have Lance sit and learn. Even after the game on Sunday, Kyle Shanahan continued to hold his ground that

Jimmy Garoppolo returns to the practice field for 49ers; No sign of Trey Lance

It looks like Jimmy Garoppolo is on the road to recovery. The veteran quarterback is on the practice field today with his San Francisco 49ers teammates. However, there is no sign of rookie quarterback Trey Lance as the team kicks off its first practice following its bye.

49ers-Colts: Kyle Shanahan optimistic Jimmy Garoppolo will play; Trey Lance may have to wait a week

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters before today’s practice. He informed the media that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would be practicing but be limited. Rookie Trey Lance won’t practice as he continues to recover from his injury.

“It will be good to go out there and be full-go today,” Shanahan said of Garoppolo. “I know he’s limited because we’ve got to make sure he can do everything. We’ll have a much better idea today, but I’m pretty optimistic about it.”

Garoppolo is returning from a calf injury suffered in a game against the Seattle Seahawks on October 3. Lance replaced the veteran quarterback in the game and then started the following weekend against the Arizona Cardinals, sustaining a knee sprain. The rookie quarterback’s
