Jan Vertonghen: Tottenham defender’s London home burgled and family held at knifepoint

Tottenham say they are supporting Jan Vertonghen after the defender’s family were held at knifepoint during a burglary of his north London home.

The Belgium international was in Germany on Tuesday for the second leg of Spurs’ Champions League round-of-16 clash vs RB Leipzig, when his house was broken into.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed men wearing balaclavas forced entry into the north London residence while his wife and children were inside.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Police were called to a residential address in NW3 at 7.49pm on 10 March to a report of a burglary.

“Officers attended. It was reported four men wearing balaclavas, armed with knives, had forced entry to the property and stolen a number of items before leaving.

“Nobody was injured. The suspects had left the scene before officers arrived. There have been no arrests and inquiries continue.”

Spurs, who lost 3-0 in Leipzig with Vertonghen not making it off the bench, have urged anyone with information to come forward.

“We have been supporting Jan and his family through this terribly traumatic time,” said a spokesperson for the Premier League club.

“We encourage anyone who has any information to come forward to help the police with their investigation.”

High-profile footballers have long been targeted by criminals, including London-based Mamadou Sakho of Crystal Palace and Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac of Arsenal.

An armed mugger was jailed for 10 years last November for attempting to steal watches from the Gunners duo as they got into a car in Hampstead.

Footage of the incident went viral as Kolasinac stood up to the muggers and chased them off in incredible scenes.
