Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed Anthony Martial missed Manchester Unietd’s vitory over Club Brugge after failing a fitness test on Thursday morning.
The France international sustained a thigh injury prior to the Europa League second leg tie and could well miss Sunday’s trip to Merseyside to face Everton.
The Red Devils continued their excellent form with a scintillating performance at Old Trafford as they put five past the Belgian side with no reply.
In Martial’s absence, January signing Odion Ighalo performed admirably and managed to get on the scoresheet for the first time since his move from the Chinese Super League. But Martial’s absence will hurt United, with the forward scoring in each of his last three appearances, including in the first leg in Bruges.
And his manager was none the wiser as to whether or not he would be able to call upon the 24-year-old for the visit to Goodison Park.
“I don’t know, he went off training yesterday, just had treatment,” Solskjaer said of Martial at his post-match press conference.
“He tried today, to be fair, he reported, had a fitness test this morning. It’s not a hamstring; it’s his thigh, in and around the knee, so I don’t know.”
United are in somewhat of an injury crisis up front, with main striker Marcus Rashford potentially set to miss the rest of the season with a back injury sustained in January.
Between them, Martial and Rashford have scored 35 goals in all competitions and the responsibility to score goals now falls to former Watford striker Ighalo.
