Mbwama Samatta pulled one back for the Villans with a header after error-prone defender John Stones fell over when dealing with a routine long ball.

Pep Guardiola’s side were by far the better team but nearly got taken to extra-time when Bjorn Engels rose brilliantly to head a corner from the right at goal but stand-in City keeper Claudio Bravo expertly saved the ball onto the post.

It was a let-off for City but they were the deserving winners to earn a third straight Carabao Cup and win five of the last seven League Cups on offer.

Left-back Mendy didn’t play any of the showpiece match but was understandably in high spirits after the game.
