Southampton fans can breathe a sigh of relief following confirmation that James Ward-Prowse only suffered a deep cut to his leg in Wednesday night’s FA Cup fourth-round replay defeat at Tottenham.
The Saints midfielder was taken off on a stretcher and given oxygen after being caught on the right leg by a late challenge from Ryan Sessegnon.
Ward-Prowse was pictured grimacing in pain and clinged on to team-mate Danny Ings while he received treatment, with pictures appearing to show a deep gash in his leg as Sessegnon appeared shaken by the incident.
And Republic of Ireland international Shane Long, who made it 1-1 on the night, was equally shocked with the gruesome injury.
Television microphones caught the 33-year-old shouting ‘f*** me, you can see his f****** bone’ as he went over to check on his stricken team-mate.
BT Sport said later during their broadcast that Southampton were concerned that Ward-Prowse had sustained ligament damage, as well as a deep cut.
Fortunately, those fears were allayed after the game with positive news emerging regarding the 25-year-old’s condition – with the possibility he could even be fit to face Burnley at St Mary’s on Saturday.
