Former footballer and boxer Curtis Woodhouse has triggered hundreds of angry reactions from Manchester United fans for his branding Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs ‘overrated’.
He even sparked a response from Scholes’ son, who called him a ‘sad t**t’, and also a surprise reply from Giggs’ brother, Rhodri.
Former Premier League midfielder Woodhouse appears to have angered the red-half of Manchester – and parts of London and Essex, obviously – with a series of bold claims on Twitter on Saturday morning.
The 40-year-old – who retired at 26 to switch to boxing, becoming British light welterweight boxing champion before returning to football as a coach – began his social media sparring by apparently debunking a number of ‘Manchester United myths’.
It all started with his claim that Liverpool legend Steve Gerrard is the ‘best midfielder England has produced in years’.
Of course, football is a game of opinions, and obviously United fans disagreed, replying with all the reasons why they believe Scholes was a superior player.
It’s probably one of the most common pub debates in the history of pub debates, right?
And Woodhouse couldn’t resist, as he cut them down with a detailed breakdown of what he believes they are all totally wrong… which just made them angrier.
Scholes was actually voted in the PFA Team of the Year twice, in 02/03 and 06/07 – two of Manchester United’s title-winning years.
This is when he teased a reply from a peeved Scholes Jnr…
That’s Woodhouse with Gerrard, above, during his spell in the Premier League with Birmingham City.
He then turned his attention to Giggs, saying the Welshman was only ever a ‘good’ player whose ability has grown into a ‘myth’ since his retirement.
He compared his goal and assist output over his 22-year career to one of a full-back, and said Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been more of a goal threat in the infancy of his career.
And as well as angry United supporters, those claims also hilariously prompted a response from Giggs’ brother, Rhodri… which should need no explanation.
Yes, he was baiting and yes, his facts may not have all been 100 per cent correct, but it’s made for some fun on an otherwise dull Saturday morning.
Thanks Curtis!
