Newcastle United have agreed personal terms with free agent Andy Carroll.
The striker is out of contract following his release by West Ham at the end of last season.
The 30-year-old has suffered with injury problems in recent seasons and managed just 14 appearances in the 2018/19 campaign.
Steve Bruce confident Newcastle fans will throw support behind team
He started his career with the Magpies with his best season coming in 2009/10 when he scored 17 Championship goals to fire his boyhood club back to the Premier League.
Carroll has not managed to reach double figures in a single season since his departure from Tyneside eight-and-half years ago.
Liverpool signed the striker for £35million in January 2011 before a loan move to the Hammers was made permanent in 2013.
Carroll is now nearing a sensational return to his boyhood club.
There are still some question marks over his fitness as he continues his recovery from ankle surgery earlier this year.
Talks are reported to have started early on deadline day, with talkSPORT’s Jim White confirming the agreement of a one-year deal in the early afternoon.
