An England supporter has died in Sofia ahead of Monday night’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Bulgaria.
A 32-year-old male was taken to hospital at 10am this morning after being found in a street in the city centre, in a condition described as ‘helpless’ by a spokesperson for the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior.
He was later pronounced dead and British officials are working to contact the man’s family.
The spokesperson said: “The incident took place at 10am today. He is a British citizen, 32 years old, at 10am and he was taken to hospital but he has died and the police are now working to clarify all the circumstances.”
The spokeswoman added that she “cannot confirm” local reports suggesting that the man may have taken drugs.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the individual’s death is not related to a reported attack by locals on an England supporter who was hospitalised with a broken arm.
Earlier on Monday, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office confirmed an England fan was being supported after the alleged attack.
“Our staff are supporting a British man following an incident in Sofia and are in contact with the Bulgarian Police,” an FCO statement read.
These incidents have occurred just days after England supporters clashed with police in Prague prior to the 2-1 defeat by Czech Republic.
Violence erupted in the city when bottles were thrown towards officers wearing riot gear, who proceeded to advance and fire stun grenades towards the crowd.
