A David Beckham esque free-kick saw Southampton snatch all three points from the grasp of struggling Watford on Saturday evening.
The Hornets looked set to pick up just their second league win of the season after taking the lead through Ismaila Sarr in the first half.
But Quique Sanchez Flores’s men were made to pay for their lack of ruthlessness in front of goal after squandered several golden opportunities to extend their lead.
Danny Ings struck first for the hosts, before Ward-Prowse bent a glorious set-piece into the corner to seal victory for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men.
The result leaves the Hornets six points adrift at the bottom, while Saints moved to within two points of 17th placed Everton – although they have played a game more.
