Jurgen Klopp has dismissed the theory that Chelsea will not pose a challenge this season under Frank Lampard.

The Europa League winners will not be able to register any new players until the summer of 2020 as punishment for breaching regulations surrounding the signing of minors.

Blues boss Lampard replaced Maurizio Sarri at the helm and has just one year of managerial experience under his belt, leading Derby to the play-off final last season.

These factors have left some to speculate that Chelsea could struggle, but the Liverpool manager thinks otherwise.

“I don’t know where people get the idea that Arsenal will not challenge, that Chelsea will not challenge with Frank [Lampard] bringing complete excitement to the club,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager also name checked Tammy Abraham who has returned from a season-long loan with Aston Villa and is hopeful of leading the line at Chelsea.

“Okay, they cannot really be busy in the transfer window, but after years when all the young boys were on loan, now they finally bring them back and get the benefit of that. It’s like it’s made for a transfer ban.

“Now [Tammy] Abraham and all these other guys come back and it’s a fantastic team.”

Liverpool, the current European champions, kick-off the new season with a clash at home to newly-promoted Norwich on Friday.

Klopp will come up against Lampard for the first time, when the two sides meet at Stamford Bridge on September 22.

In their last match, the Reds were beaten 5-4 on penalties in the Community Shield by Manchester City, who narrowly pipped them to the title by a point in 2018/19.
