Bernd Leno – 6

Looked very calm and collected on the ball and his distribution was good. His only meaningful save came when Joelinton shot straight at him.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 8

Offered a threat from right-back and was defensively solid. He won the ball back and produced a brilliant cross for Aubameyang’s goal.

Calum Chambers – 8

His ball-playing abilities will suit Arsenal’s style under Emery. The former Southampton defender put in a very strong showing at St James’ Park.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 7

Struggled with Joelinton’s physicality at times, but he still formed a comfortable-looking partnership with Chambers.

Nacho Monreal – 8

The Spaniard will be feeling the pressure following the £25million signing of left-back Kieran Tierney from Celtic, however, he was faultless on Tyneside.

Matteo Guendouzi – 7

Broke up play numerous times and kept Arsenal ticking. His awareness to sense danger helped Arsenal’s defence today.

Granit Xhaka – 6

Barring a few misplaced passes, Arsenal’s captain for the day had a relatively easy afternoon partnering Guendouzi in midfield.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 3

The playmaker gave the ball away far too many times and missed a glorious chance to break the deadlock in the first-half when he blazed over from close-range.

Joe Willock – 5

Showed glimpses of quality in a number 10 role, but was marked well by Isaac Hayden.

Reiss Nelson – 5

He was anonymous for large parts of the game and his set-piece delivery was poor. He will hope he has another chance to impress Emery in the future.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 7

Always looked threatening running in behind. He was starved of service for most of the contest, however, he kept a cool head to poke the ball past Martin Dubravka just before the hour mark.
