Ole Gunnar Solskjaer press conference: Manchester United manager has no transfer update but confirms Alexis

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told reporters they ‘wasted a question’ when asked for an update on Manchester United’s possible January transfer business.

However, he did confirm one player will be linking up with the Red Devils this summer – Alexis Sanchez!

Reports on Tuesday morning suggested Sanchez was in line for a return to Old Trafford at the end of his loan spell with Inter, with Solskjaer keen on utilising the Chile forward next season.

And the boss said he WILL be back for the 2020/21 campaign – with Solskjaer backing Sanchez ‘to prove everyone wrong’ when he’s back in the Premier League.

“Alexis will come back in the summer and prove you all wrong,” said the United manager in Wednesday’s press conference.

Solskjaer was also quizzed on the latest transfer news concerning United, amid rumours the Old Trafford club will sign NO ONE this month after the collapse of Bruno Fernandes’ proposed move.

“I haven’t got any updates for you on transfers,” added the Norwegian. “I think it was a waste [of a question] – I gave you the option [not to ask it]! I haven’t got anything to say now. My mind is just on the game.

“We’ve got players here we’re working hard to get back as well and if there is something out there, then the club are pursuing that and looking at it.

“Of course it [January] is a difficult window. It always has been. I can’t remember how many good ones we’ve brought in, good deals that we’ve brought in in January. Henrik [Larsson] was good, Nemanja [Vidic] and Patrice [Evra] were two good ones.”

Solskjaer also discussed other topics in his pre-Man City press conference, and you can read the best bits, below…

Can you turn the Carabao Cup semi-final vs Man City around?

“Well, it looked like it was over at half-time. I have to say the second part of that first half, they outplayed us for a while and it’s hard.

“But then when we got the goal, of course you’re back in it, we hope for another one.

“But now we’ve got to go into the memory bank and think PSG because we’ve done it against good teams before and it gives us some hope, and the game in December [when United won 2-1] of course gives us hope that we can do something there.”

On United’s approach for the game

“It has to be a perfect performance to win with two goals against such a good team away from home, so for us it’s not about away goals, we just need to score two more than them.

“When they happen and how it happens, if we concede two we need to score four so it would be good not to concede first because that makes it less difficult.”

Will Marcos Rojo leave?

“I wouldn’t think so. Marcos has been injured and is working to get back and get fit again.”

Paul Pogba injury latest

“It’s hard to put timescales on long-term injuries because they need the training and need to be fitter. Paul’s had his cast off and Scott [McTominay] took his brace off so at least they can now start doing some work on the grass.”

On FA Cup replays

“Cup replays… you know, I think we all regret maybe not going for it in 2000 when we went to the World Club Championship tournament in Brazil. It’s never nice not to be participating.

“It’s supposed to be a break and if it’s going to help the English clubs, they need a break. It’s up to Jurgen [Klopp] and Liverpool to make decisions, Jose [Mourinho] and Tottenham… We’re just happy we didn’t get a replay ourselves. It was playing on our mind, three days less holiday.”
