Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly been backed by Manchester United’s board, despite the defeat to Burnley on Wednesday night.

Sunday’s loss to table-topping rivals Liverpool was compounded on Wednesday as the Clarets secured a first victory at Old Trafford since 1962.

Chris Wood opened the scoring and a memorable 2-0 victory was wrapped up in style by Clarets favourite Jay Rodriguez, whose stunning strike beat David de Gea and darkened the mood of the United faithful.

The vast majority of supporters were on their feet when chants of ‘stand up if you hate Glazers’ echoed around Old Trafford, while the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward also copped flak.

While chants in support of Solskjaer rang around the stadium, the defeat last Sunday at Anfield will have tested the resolve of even the most ardent United fan.

The chasm between the bitter rivals has swung drastically to become almost insurmountable, with the difference between the two sides now 30 points – and seemingly set to increase as the season progresses.

As European and world champions, the Reds are sitting comfortably as one of the greatest teams on the planet – no doubt thanks to their charismatic leader Jurgen Klopp.

And as Solskjaer continues to set one unwanted record after another, Klopp is himself setting brilliant new standards and his record since his Norwegian nemesis was appointed is practically flawless.

Since Solskjaer was named Man United manager on a permanent basis – being handed the job on the back of his wildly successful caretaker spell – the Red Devils have dropped a remarkable 54 points – winning only 42 points from a possible 96.

Conversely, Liverpool have dropped just two points in the same time period – taking 85 from a possible 87 points as they continue their relentless charge towards a first Premier League title.

With games against Wolves and Chelsea immediately on the horizon, United are in serious danger of dropping out of the Champions League race.

And with Sheffield United in such ominous form and just a point behind them in seventh place, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that the Red Devils could miss out on Europe entirely in the same year Liverpool win their first league championship since 1990.
