Lady Moss was at his bedside in the final stages and said he died peacefully at their Mayfair house.

“He died as he lived, looking wonderful,” she told the Daily Mail.

“He simply tired in the end and he just closed his beautiful eyes and that was that.”

Once described as ‘the greatest driver never to win the World Championship’, Moss’ outstanding sportsmanship ensured he was always a popular member of the racing fraternity.

Moss was effectively forced into retirement from top-level motorsport in 1962 after a horror crash at Goodwood left him in a coma for a month and partially paralysed for six months.
