Wilfried Zaha has been named among the Crystal Palace substitutes for their first Premier League game of the season.

Palace host Everton, who Zaha was keen to join during the transfer window, but was denied his move away from Selhurst Park.

The 26-year-old reportedly submitted a transfer request to force through a move and manager Roy Hodgson acknowledged the player wanted out.

Zaha was a crucial member of the Palace side last season, with 10 goals and five assists in 34 league matches, and Hodgson believes he will remain a key player this campaign.

“It’s well documented that he wanted to leave. It hasn’t worked out for him in that respect,” the manager said.

“But now, I am looking forward to seeing him do this season what he has done for us in the past few seasons.

“His beef is with the chairman and the owners because he wanted to leave and they didn’t receive an acceptable offer, but when you sign long-term contracts then you have to accept this kind of thing and come to terms with that.”

James McCarthy, signed from Everton, is on the bench alongside fellow new recruits Gary Cahill and Victor Camarasa.

For Everton, Alex Iwobi, who the club signed instead of Zaha, is not in the matchday squad, though Moise Kean is on the bench along with fellow new signings Jean-Philippe Gbamin and goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.
