WrestleMania 36 was widely criticised for going ahead during a time where the Covid-19 virus has forced most of the world to come to a halt.
However, night one of WrestleMania 36 – WWE’s first ever two-night iteration of the event – was a roaring success.
At the pinnacle of the triumph was the main event – Undertaker Vs AJ Styles in a Boneyard match.
The Deadman, 55, has been criticised for his up and down form over the past 2 years and he has openly talked about retirement recently, too.
However, this classic with AJ Styles proved he is still a very valuable commodity to WWE and this may well go down as one of the greatest WrestleMania matches ever. Certainly the most creative.
The match started with Styles rising from a coffin and saw Undertaker roll in on a motorcycle in a similar vein to what he did as the American Bad Ass some 20 years ago.
In the early exchanges, ‘Taker dominated Styles and beat him to a near pulp. Things changed when Styles’s OC stablemates Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson turned up.
That gave Styles enough time to hit The Phenom with a slab of concrete and get the upper hand.
After beating ‘Taker down, Styles laid him in an empty grave and set about filling it in.
Just as The Phenomenal One was about to make that happen, a shining light came from behind him and, like magic, that’s where Undertaker stood.
Shocked by what transpired, Styles headed for the hills and climbed a ladder onto a roof. ‘Taker followed him, laying out his OC teammates as he went and finally he got his hands on Styles once more.
From there, the seven-time world champion Chokeslammed Styles off the roof and through a wood panel to effectively end the contest.
After teasing that he would not bury Styles alive after all for putting up such a good fight, the nasty streak returned and ‘Taker beat him into the grave.
After filling it in, ‘Taker set the place alight and got on his motorcycle to ride into the night. It was an awesome sequence.
The whole thing was shot like it was a real top-end movie and it’s been received like a true triumph for WWE.
This kind of match could get serious miles out of The Undertaker if WWE don’t go into overkill and play it correctly.
Either way, fans have branded this one of the all-time great WrestleMania matches and it’s a hard point to argue.
