Former Cardiff City star Peter Whittingham is in a serious condition in hospital after suffering head injuries.
The 35-year-old was injured in an accidental fall in a pub in Barry earlier this month, South Wales Police have confirmed.
There were reports on social media on Tuesday night that Whittingham had passed away, with some of his former teammates even posting tributes, including Michael Chopra.
But Whittingham is currently in hospital and receiving medical care for serious injuries.
“At around 10pm on March 7, South Wales Police were called to a licensed premises in Barry,” a police statement read.
“A 35-year-old man from Penarth suffered a head injury as a result of a fall and remains at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.”
The statement continued: “At this stage there is no evidence or suggestion of a criminal act, and it appears the injury was caused by an accidental fall.
“Enquiries are continuing into the circumstances of the incident.”
The former midfielder is a legendary figure at the Bluebirds, having played 457 times for the club in a decade long-spell.
Born in Nuneaton, Whittingham started his career at Aston Villa, playing over 50 times for the Midlands outfit before moving to Cardiff in 2006.
He spent the final two years of his career at Blackburn, before announcing his retirement last summer.
