Leeds United announce plans to increase Elland Road capacity to 50,000 – IF Whites get into the Premier L

Leeds United are planning to expand the capacity of Elland Road to hold 50,000 supporters in the future.

However, the club MUST be in the Premier League before the expansion can begin.

Speaking at an event marking the Whites’ 100th anniversary, managing director Angus Kinnear outlined his plans at a civic reception held by the Lord Mayor of Leeds.

The planned extension will take place on the West Stand, so it matches the East Stand in terms of height.

“In our centenary year we’re very proud to announce a partnership with the council on two initiatives,” Kinnear said, as reported by LeedsLive.

“They fall under the title of Vision Elland Road. You notice that is a far cry from the Beeston we see today.

“Part of it is around the stadium and taking our stadium up to 50,000 and turning it into a true ground which can compete with other stadiums in the Premier League and in Europe.”

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the expansion plans are ‘dependent on Premier League status’, as the club could sell 50,000 tickets in the top flight.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side fell short last season in their quest for promotion as they were beaten by Derby County in their Championship play-off semi-final.

However, the Argentine has assembled a side he believes can go one better this term and Leeds can return to the top of the second division table this weekend if they beat Birmingham City on Saturday.
