Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has told talkSPORT that his team are still working to recover the ‘confidence and trust’ lost in their 7-2 humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich.
Spurs lost 3-0 to Brighton just days after the defeat and were held to a 1-1 draw by Watford on Saturday as they returned from the intervening international break.
The Hornets deservingly led for the majority of the game thanks to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s sixth-minute goal, but Dele Alli struck late on to salvage a point.
“Very big relief,” Pochettino began when asked by talkSPORT’s Ian Abraham’s for his post-match reaction.
“Of course I’m very happy in the way we fight in the second half, never give up, the character we show.
“We need to improve in our performance. In the last two games we concede two early goals and it’s so easy for the opponent and that is a thing we need to improve and learn.
“And of course after the defeat against Bayern Munich it’s tough for the team and when you concede in Brighton and concede today.
“But today obviously the game was different, the team showed the character and then we score.”
“Very happy, very happy because I think step by step we are going to build to be solid and then start to show our quality.”
Reflecting on the opening 45 minutes, the Argentinian continued: “Disappointed with the performance of the first half because I think it was tough to concede in the way that we conceded.
“I think the goal that we concede again with Brighton it was the same.
“With Brighton it was difficult because it was so close to the Champions League game that we played with Bayern Munich.
“But today I think the team showed great character.”
When asked how long he thinks it will take for his team to get back to their best in the wake of the Bayern Munich thrashing, Pochettino concluded: “I think it is step by step. You cannot go from zero to 100 in one game.
“I think the most important now is to build the confidence, the trust that we lose after the game against Bayern Munich.
“It is difficult to recover from there, but I think step by step we are going to recover our trust, our confidence and play more relaxed.”
