England’s Rugby World Cup stars missed out on a big windfall after falling short in their bid for glory.
Eddie Jones’ side were stunned by South Africa in Saturday’s final as the Springboks lifted the Webb Ellis trophy.
As well as the heartbreak of losing the showpiece event in Japan, England players were also denied a £2.5million bonus from the Rugby Football Union [RFU].
The squad would have shared that pot had they emerged victors, which would have amounted to around £82,000 per player.
Head coach Jones and his backroom team would also have shared a £1m bonus payment had they triumped over South Africa, who will receive £325,000 for the winning the trophy.
England’s players, however, still will have pocketed a decent amount of money for their exploits in Japan.
The squad shared £1.2m as reward for their stunning semi-final victory over New Zealand – around £41,200 per player.
England players also received bonuses for their pool matches, including the cancelled game against France, and their quarter-final against Australia, on top of their match fees of £13,000 per game. So not all bad!
