On an historic night for the Springboks, Siya Kolisi – their first black captain – became the first black captain of any country to lift the Webb Ellis trophy.

Kolisi grew up in poverty in a township and was understandably emotional at what he and his team had achieved.

He said: “The people of South Africa have got behind us and we’re so grateful.

“With a team like this…different backgrounds, different races and we came together with one goal and we wanted to achieve it.

“I have never seen, since I’ve been alive, I have never seen South Africa like this.

“The coach just told us that we’re not playing for ourselves anymore, we’re playing for the people. That’s what we wanted to do.

“We appreciate all the support, we love you South Africa and we can achieve anything if we work together as one.”

The celebrations back in South Africa following their stunning World Cup triumph were unsurprisingly euphoric.

Back in Kolisi’s hometown of Zwide, there were fantastic scenes as locals rejoiced in their hero’s exploits.
