Next summer may be the time for Harry Kane to leave Tottenham according to Danny Murphy – who suggested a shock move to his former club Liverpool could work.
Kane, the England forward, has been fiercely loyal to his boyhood team despite being constantly linked with other clubs since breaking onto the scene as one of the world’s best goalscorers.
But if Spurs fail to turnaround their dreadful start to the campaign, with the club currently 14th in the Premier League and just six points above the bottom three, there are suggestions the England captain – who will be 27 next summer – could finally put his career first and open the door to an exit.
The striker has been routinely linked with moves to the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United in recent transfer windows, with Roy Keane recently telling his former club to ‘go get him’.
But former Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder Murphy believes Kane should aim higher if he stays in the Premier League, saying he would be a great fit for both title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.
And he claims he would knock two of those clubs’ biggest starts out of the starting XI if he made the move.
Speaking on Drivetime on talkSPORT, Murphy said: “Would Liverpool and Man City fans take Harry Kane now?
“I think Harry Kane would get in Liverpool’s team ahead of Firmino. He would score more goals.
“I love Firmino, but he’s not Harry Kane.
“And with Aguero being nearly 32, I think Man City fans would welcome Harry Kane with open arms.
“Are Spurs going to make the top four? I don’t think so. Are they going to win the Champions League? No.
“What would he cost? That’s another question.
“It could be a world record, he’s got a phenomenal goal record.”
