Andre Gomes struggled to contain his emotions as he read out letters supporting him through his recovery from a serious ankle injury he sustained earlier this month.

A challenge from Heung-min Son during Everton’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham on November 3 left the midfielder with a fracture dislocation, and he was administered oxygen while being stretchered off the pitch.

The following day, Gomes underwent successful surgery and has now begun rehab at the Toffees’ Finch Farm training ground.

Following his operation, the Portugal international posted a video on social media to update fans on his progress and there is hope that he could feature at some point again this season.

He has now filmed another video in which he reads through messages sent in from fans to offer him support throughout his rehabilitation.

Some of the letters were sent in by rival supporters, while one Everton fan admitted to breaking his toe in anger after witnessing the stricken player go down.

“Hi Andre, I was watching the game against Spurs on television and I was so disappointed to see you get injured that I kicked my table and broke my toe,” Ben wrote in his letter.

“This is a weird one, I honestly feel bad for you Ben,” Gomes replied. “I didn’t want that to happen to you! Hope you get well soon.

“I would wish nothing like this would happen to both of us, thanks for your message and support and I give you the best wishes as well.’

“Hey guys. I received a lot of letters and emails and I would like to thank you all for your kind support. It means a lot for me. It will make this easier,” Gomes added.

On the verge of tears, Gomes again voiced his appreciation and vowed to return better than before.

“Honestly guys, it’s almost impossible,” he finished. “I feel sensitive and emotional with what you are doing with me.

“I just need to thank you all. It’s just emotion… wow. I’ll be back stronger for sure and I want to help the team reach the goals we set at the beginning of the season. And just, once again, thank you for everything.”
