Mikel Arteta to Arsenal: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s brother left unimpressed with imminent arrival of M

Mikel Arteta is set to be announced as Unai Emery’s replacement as Arsenal manager – and the news has not gone down well with the brother of one Gunners star.

The Spaniard is in talks over the Emirates job and is expected to be be in the dugout for their next Premier League clash on Saturday against Everton, which is live on talkSPORT.

Having played for Arsenal for five years and captained them, Arteta is a popular figure among the club’s supporters.

But he will have to work to win over the family of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang it seems, as his brother Willy has criticised the imminent appointment of the 37-year-old.

Arteta has been coaching alongside Pep Guardiola at Manchester City since 2016 but, like current interim boss Freddie Ljungberg, has no previous managerial experience.

In response to an Instagram post from fan channel AFTV which mentioned the Man City assistant was set to take charge, Willy Aubameyang wrote: “Ljungberg Arteta is the same, no experience.”

Like his brother, Willy is also a professional footballer, but has not quite the hit the same heights as his famous sibling.

He began his career with AC Milan but failed to make a senior breakthrough and has played mainly in the lower leagues around Europe.

An Arsenal legend shares similar concerns about Arteta’s credentials.

With the Gunners sitting tenth in the Premier League table, Paul Merson insists they are crying out for an experienced manager.

“To ask someone with no managerial experience to take charge in the current circumstances at Arsenal is a big ask,” Merson told Sky Sports. “But there are also massive question marks over his credentials, massive questions.

“One of the major factors with Arteta being linked with the job is that he’s worked closely under Guardiola, and he used to play at Arsenal. Other than the fact he won’t get lost on the way to training, I don’t know what else he brings to the table.

“We’ve seen how out of his depth Freddie Ljungberg [interim manager] has been in recent weeks. What’s the difference between Ljungberg and Arteta other than the fact Arteta has worked under Pep at Manchester City?

“It doesn’t mean Arteta has earned his stripes or he’s better qualified, and Arsenal won’t suddenly start playing like City if Arteta is appointed because it’s not as simple as that.”
