Kevin van Veen did his talking on the pitch after Man City youth player Taylor Harwood-Bellis allegedly mocked the Scunthorpe forward over his salary.
The Irons knocked City’s U21s out of the Leasing.com Trophy on Wednesday night with an emphatic 3-1 victory in the round of 16.
And it was a victory which tasted extra sweet for man-of-the-match Van Veen, who was involved in all three goals, scoring two and setting up the other.
The 28-year-old claims he was spurred on by 17-year-old City defender Harwood-Bellis, who was apparently boasting about how much money he earns compared to the Scunthorpe striker.
Van Veen tweeted: “@ManCity if u need down to earth players and players who don’t cash anyone off and giving it the big one give me a ring with all due respect. #2goalsandassist”
The Dutch striker hit an unstoppable strike from 30 yards before volleying in his second.
It ended City U21’s impressive run in the competition, formerly known as the Checkatrade Trophy.
Paul Harsley’s side had beaten three league sides on their route to the last-16, but they were no match for the League Two outfit at Glanford Park.
