Jurgen Klopp can lead Liverpool to an ‘historic’ campaign, believes former Reds star Ray Houghton, who says the manager will be going for every trophy he can get his hands on this season.

The Reds are currently enjoying the best season in history of ANY club from Europe’s top-five leagues, as their 30-year wait for a league title appears set to end soon.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have an unassailable 25-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, having taken 76 points from a possible 78, while they are still involved in both the FA Cup and Champions League.

They need just five more wins to be crowned Premier League champions, and if they win their next five league matches they will do it in record time with nine games to spare.

The high-flying Reds will also kick off the next stage of their Champions League title defence on Tuesday night, as they travel to Spain to take on Atletico Madrid in the round-of-16.

talkSPORT will bring you full LIVE coverage of that clash with Houghton in the commentary box, and the two-time title winner believes this season will be one for the record books.

Speaking to Jim White, the former Republic of Ireland international said: “Is there anything Liverpool can’t do? It doesn’t look that way, does it.

“They’re only five away from winning the Premier League title, which would be absolutely remarkable.

“To get 25 wins out of 26 games is just pure domination, they’ve been absolutely superb.

“And obviously they’re still in the FA Cup and Champions League, so I’m sure the manager would want an historic season having won the Club World Cup for the first time in their history in December.

“Everything is just going right for them this season and they’ve handled everything brilliantly.”

As well as their dominant domestic form, Liverpool have been going great guns in Europe too, having suffered just one defeat in the group stage to Napoli.

And while Houghton expects Atleti to be tough opponents, he is confident Klopp’s side can break their stubborn defences.

“Liverpool been very good and when it gets to the knockout stages, as they proved last season, they are very adept at beating teams,” he added.

“I think this is a tough game, simply because Atletico Madrid are one of those dour sides, they’re very tough to break down.

“They don’t score many, that’s a fact, but they’re very hard to break down and I think Liverpool will find that.”
