Aston Villa and Bournemouth both slipped to damaging defeats in their battle to beat the drop on Saturday.
The Cherries were the victims of more VAR drama during their 3-0 defeat at Burnley, as an equaliser quickly turned into a foal at the other end.
Harry Wilson made it 1-1 before VAR spotted an earlier handball from Adam Smith in the Bournemouth box.
The goal was chalked off and a penalty awarded at the other end instead, which Jay Rodriguez converted to add Matej Vydra’s strike, and Dwight McNeil rounded things off.
But Villa could not capitalise as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Southampton, with Shane Long striking early before Stuart Armstrong scored in injury time.
Elsewhere, it was a good day for Chelsea, who beat Spurs 2-1 before watching top-four rivals Sheffield United draw 1-1 at home to Brighton.
Neal Maupay cancelled out Enda Stevens’ strike to earn a valuable point for the Seagulls and put a dent in the Blades’ European bid.
And Crystal Palace put an end to their winless run as Patrick van Aanholt netted a stunning free-kick in a 1-0 victory over Newcastle.
