It’s not always the main event that steals the show.
At WrestleMania 36, a lot has been said about the failed Roman Reigns and Goldberg match – which saw Braun Strowman step in for the former – Undertaker versus AJ Styles, Edge versus Randy Orton, and Drew McIntyre’s desire to dethrone Brock Lesnar.
On night one of WrestleMania 36 – the first ever ‘Mania over two nights – WWE had a card stacked ready to claim the mantle of stealing the show.
While The Undertaker and AJ Styles put on a main event for the ages, Seth Rollins had told Kevin Owens in the lead up to their WrestleMania bout that KO had made no memories on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
The Messiah gimmick is one that has excelled in the weeks where WWE have been forced to put on shows without an audience because Rollins has conveyed his messaged clearer than ever before.
For Owens, this WrestleMania match was about proving a point and he hit the mark, for sure.
The match started off with Rollins, the heel, beating down Owens for large parts of it. The former Shield member even remarked how easy Owens was making it for him throughout.
When Owens mounted a comeback, Rollins hit him with the ring-bell to cause a disqualification again, depriving Owens of his big moment.
KO then challenged Rollins to a no disqualification match and that’s when things really kicked into the high gears.
The closing sequence saw Owens scale the 20ft high WrestleMania sign in the Performance Center and hit a Swanton on Rollins through a table.
Following that, Owens got Rollins back in the ring, hit him with a Stunner, and picked up a much-needed victory.
It was a true moment for Owens and his dive from the WrestleMania sign is going to be played on highlight packages for years and years to come.
As this feud developed, Owens cost Rollins and Buddy Murphy the Tag Team titles, Owens explained he couldn’t bear how Rollins had tried to run RAW since the turn of the year.
“Why? I mean, go back and watch the last three or four months of Raw. You know, listen. No offense, I did what I had to do. I’m sure there’s some very angry people after me right now, so I’m just going to go. But if you see The Street Profits, tell them great job. Alright?”
