David Ospina left the pitch on a stretcher with blood pouring down his face after a collision with two players on Thursday night.
The Napoli goalkeeper, formerly of Arsenal, crashed into teammate Mario Rui and Atalanta’s Mattia Caldara after pushing the ball wide from an Atalanta set piece.
The incident came in the 25th minute as Alejandro Dario Gomez whipped the ball in and Ospina put out a strong hand.
Rui and Caldara followed in, attempting to get to the ball, and both could not avoid hitting the goalkeeper.
He was left with a serious cut as a result and blood was visible on the broadcast before he was bandaged up and stretchered off.
Alex Meret replaced him.
As the game continued, ex-Chelsea man Mario Pasalic put Atalanta ahead at the start of the second half.
Robin Gosens doubled the home side’s lead and they saw the game out for a 2-0 win.
Atalanta sit fourth in Serie A and Napoli remain sixth.
