Making a choice for the 49ers in Sunday’s NFL Network live draft didn’t seem to come easy for Steve Mariucci, but when the time came for him to put on the GM hat for his former team, he made the decision many fans hope to see come to fruition when the real draft gets underway Thursday night.

Mariucci was a natural fit to make the call at pick three in the NFL Network’s draft, which featured 32 different personalities making selections for the 32 NFL teams. Mariucci, who was the head coach in San Francisco from 1997 to 2002 and is now an analyst for the NFL Network, says his choice would be Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields instead of Alabama quarterback Mac Jones and North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance.

“I’m going to take Justin Fields,” Mariucci said. “He’s got a heck of a body of work. He’s the offensive player of the year in the Big Ten, two times. He’s athletic, he’s strong, he can throw. He’s a heck of a runner too, and I really like this kid a lot.”

Mariucci seems to like Jones and Lance as well. But in the end, Fields wound up being his favorite of the bunch.

“There’s an argument to be made for the other guys, too,” Mariucci said. “Mac Jones now, he’s an accurate guy, he’s a smart guy, he’s a winner, he’s a leader, all of those things. Not quite the athlete — he only had 42 (career) yards rushing.

“The other guy we’re not talking enough about is Trey Lance. The kid from North Dakota State is young and he might have the strongest arm out of the whole bunch, and great upside. So, this was a three-horse race for me, but I had to choose somebody right?”

49ers select Justin Fields in PFF’s latest mock draft

Steve Palazzolo is a senior analyst at Pro Football Focus. He recently released his latest first-round mock draft, which isn’t necessarily based on what he thinks each NFL team will do with each selection. This one is based on what Palazzolo believes is best for each organization and the picks he would make if the decision were up to him.

As is the case with most mock drafts, Palazzolo has quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson going No. 1 and No. 2 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets, respectively. That brings us to the decision for the San Francisco 49ers. The team traded up to the No. 3 spot last month to acquire a quarterback of the future. It can choose between Justin Fields of Ohio State, Trey Lance of North Dakota State, or Mac Jones of

It’s time for ESPN’s annual joint mock draft by analysts Mel Kiper and Todd McShay (h/t to Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports). The two take turns projecting the selections for each NFL team through the first three rounds. While most “experts,” including McShay, are still predicting Mac Jones of Alabama to head to the San Francisco 49ers at No. 3 overall, Kiper ended up making

Cynthia Frelund sees Justin Fields as the best draft fit for the 49ers

NFL Network analytics expert Cynthia Frelund recently used her context-based data models to determine the best team fits for the top draft-eligible quarterbacks. What are the ideal landing spots for the incoming group of rookie passers?

“The goal for each pairing: maximizing the draftee’s 2021 win share,” wrote Frelund, “factoring in what we know about each team’s personnel, coaches and strategy right now. And of course, I’m aiming to present realistic matches, ones that could actually come to fruition on draft day.”

Richard Sherman still betting on Justin Fields to 49ers in draft

On Wednesday, Justin Fields worked out in front of San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, general manager John Lynch, and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello. Was it enough to convince the trio that he — not Mac Jones nor Trey Lance — should be the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming draft? We may not know the answer to that until April 29.

Former cornerback Richard Sherman already explained why drafting Fields made sense for his former squad.

“He’s been at a program that competes at a high level year in and year out,” Sherman said last week on The Cris Collinsworth Podcast, which he co-hosts, “always in a championship, always in
