It’s Gerrit Cole’s turn to keep the Yankees’ rotation train rolling, and he’ll probably be doing so Saturday against the Chicago White Sox with revenge on his mind.
His last time out, Cole turned in his worst outing of the season in a five-run, five-inning road loss to the Texas Rangers.
First pitch for Saturday’s game at Yankee Stadium is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. YES and MLB Network will televise the game.
On Friday night, Jordan Montgomery worked seven shutout innings in a 2-1 Yankees’ series-opening win over the White Sox that featured a triple play in the top of the ninth and then a walk-off hit by Gleyber Torres in the bottom of the inning.
Counting Corey Kluber’s no-hitter on Wednesday and Domingo German’s seven-shutout innings on Thursday, both against the Texas Rangers, Yankees starters have worked 23 shutout innings over their last three games.
Cole still has great season numbers despite his struggles this past week, a 5-2 record and 2.03 ERA with 85 strikeouts and five walks over 57.2 innings in nine starts.
Right-hander Dylan Cease (2-0, 2.41, 8 starts) will be on the mound for the White Sox, who lead the AL Central with a 26-17 record.
The Yankees’ lineup is a strange one with Luke Voit, the MLB’s 2020 home run champion, leading off. Usual leadoff hitter DJ LeMahieu is getting an off day. Also, outfielder Clint Frazier still isn’t back even though he has told the Yankees that his neck issues are gone.
