The series starts with the Yankees (31-26) third in the AL East standings, 5 ½ games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays (36-22) and 2 ½ games behind the second-place Red Sox (33-23).
Boston just lost three of four in Houston and is 11-10 in its last 21 games. The Yankees split four games with Tampa Bay this week and are 3-7 since winning a season-best six in a row from May 18-23.
The pitching matchup has Michael King (0-2, 2.86) starting for the Yankees against Red Sox righty Nathan Eovaldi (6-2, 4.01). King made his first start of the season last Sunday in Detroit and allowed four runs, two earned, over 2 1/3 innings in a loss.
The Yankees have had major offensive woes this season, but are benching hot-hitting Miguel Andujar, who is 5-for-15 with three homers in his last four games.
