For the last year, Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen has tried to stretch every day into 25 hours and every week into eight days.
At the ballpark, where his job required him to be morning till night, he guided the Diamondbacks through decisions as large as what to do at the trade deadline and as small as which player to call up after an injury. At home, he was helping his family navigate a scary, exhausting and ever-changing health challenge. Last May, Hazen’s wife Nicole began suffering seizures. That July, the Hazens learned that Nicole had a glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer.
The Hazens first revealed the diagnosis in February, as spring training was about to begin. At the time, Hazen said he felt able to juggle his duties as GM with those he shouldered as a husband and a father to the pair’s four school-age boys.
