David Warner joined in the fun at Edgbaston by turning out his pockets as England fans mocked him about the infamous ball-tampering scandal.
The Australia batsman is playing in his first Test match since being banned for 12-months over ‘Sandgate’ along with Cameron Bancroft and Steve Smith.
As expected, the trio have received quite the hostile reception from the home crowd, and that wasn’t about to stop on the third day of the opening Ashes Test.
On a day which has seen fans dressed up as Mexicans chasing a giant baby Donald Trump through the stands, it’s safe to say the crowd were in a pretty raucous mood.
As Warner was sent down to field in front of the boisterous Hollies Stand, England fans chanted ‘he’s got sandpaper in his hands’ and ‘we saw you cry on the telly’.
And in a brilliant display of fun, the 32-year-old smiled, showed his pockets were empty, and mouthed the words along with the crowd.
However, the Aussie couldn’t replicate such great form with the bat, departing to chants of ‘cheerio’ after being caught behind off Stuart Broad for 8 as Australia made a shaky start to their second innings.
England are well on top in the first Test despite a mini batting collapse on day three at Edgbaston.
Broad and Chris Woakes helped the hosts to a 90-run lead after Rory Burns, Ben Stokes, Johnny Bairstow and Moeen Ali were all dismissed within quick succession.
And Australia’s returning openers, Bancroft and Warner, were both out cheaply for the second time in the Test match as the visitors lost two early wickets.
