As such, a move to United was widely reported as comparisons with Michael Carrick began to be made.

However, Newcastle stood firm and it appears as though the indecision by the Red Devils will cost them dearly.

According to the Daily Mail, a fee as low as £20m would have been enough to prise the precocious talent away from St James’ Park.

Instead, United will have to fork out around £70m next summer if they want to get the deal done.
