Ilkay Gundogan signed a contract extension with Manchester City and they made a subtle dig at Arsenal with their announcement.

The Germany midfielder committed his future to the club until 2023 after establishing himself as a key member of Pep Guardiola’s squad.

City announced the news on social media with a video of the 28-year-old removing his shirt to reveal another underneath that said ‘Gundogan 2023’.

This appears to make fun of the way Laurent Koscielny was revealed as a Bordeaux player after leaving Arsenal.

The Ligue 1 club posted a video showing the centre-back removing his Gunners shirt to reveal a Bordeaux jersey underneath.

This promoted a scathing reaction from fans and former players of the north London club who labelled the move as disrespectful.

Koscielny soured his relationship by refusing to go on Arsenal‘s pre-season tour to try and force a move back to France.

Meanwhile, Gundogan appears happier than ever with the Manchester club.

He signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 and has since gone on to make 114 appearances and scored 17 goals.

“I am very happy to have signed the new contract,” Gundogan told the club’s website.

“I have hugely enjoyed the last three years here at City and everyone at the Club has helped make me feel at home from my very first day.

“It’s a privilege to be a part of this team, playing the style of football we do and winning trophies. It’s very difficult to do that and I’m delighted to be a part of it.

“I’m really excited about what we can go on to achieve in the next few seasons.”

Commenting on Gundogan’s new contract, City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said: “Ilkay’s new deal is more excellent news for our Club.

“He has shown how important he is to the team and has played a huge part in everything that we have achieved so far.

“We are thrilled he has committed his long-term future to Manchester City.”
