Paul Pogba’s crucial penalty miss against Wolves shows why Marcus Rashford should be Manchester United’s primary spot-kick taker.
That’s the verdict of Manchester correspondent Jamie Jackson, who was in the press box to watch the Red Devils’ 1-1 draw at Molineux on Monday night.
United had to settle for a point after Pogba saw his second-half penalty saved by Rui Patricio. It came after Ruben Neves curled in a brilliant equaliser to cancel out Anthony Martial’s 50th United goal.
It was Pogba’s fourth miss from the spot in 2019, with the Frenchman demanding he take the kick instead of striker Rashford, who scored a penalty quite emphatically in last week’s 4-0 win over Chelsea.
United legend Gary Neville blasted the Frenchman for taking the ball from his team-mate, but it didn’t seem a massive issue on the pitch as Rashford tossed Pogba the ball, thumped him on the chest and gave him a nod of approval.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also had no problem with the incident when quizzed after the game. It wasn’t a bad penalty after all, it was a brilliant save from Patricio.
But Guardian journalist Jackson believes the nerves of steel Rashford has shown in the past means he should now be United’s main kicker.
Speaking on Tuesday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, he said: “It’s interesting what Solskjaer said about Pogba. Okay, he wants to take responsibility, but he’s got a record now of missing a few.
“I was at the PSG game in Paris last season when Rashford took that penalty right at the end, and you talk about pressure, he stepped up and smashed it in to the top corner.
“I just think it might be Rashford’s turn to take a few. He might end up missing a few, of course he might, but at the moment you just look at Pogba’s record and it’s not brilliant.”
Despite the missed opportunity, a draw away against a tough Wolves side is not a terrible result for United.
And Jackson believes they have rediscovered their mojo after their ‘disastrous’ end to last season.
“Maybe it’s a bit too early after two games, but they already look, to me, more vibrant than they did last season, and maybe since Sir Alex Ferguson left,” he added.
“They look more promising in the way they’re playing.
Sam Allardyce has no problem with Man United having two designated penalty takers
“They are bright but a little be naïve, maybe. You have to give Wolves credit, they’re a cracking team and they were at their home ground and they rallied well.
“But if you look at how United finished last season, I think they won one of their last 13 games, they had an absolute disaster, and how they’ve played in their first two games this season, it’s like chalk and cheese.
“They look fitter and the players they have brought in have fitted right into the team.”
