Liverpool have revealed plans to take Anfield’s capacity beyond 60,000, which could make it the third largest stadium in the Premier League.
The club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, have abandoned existing proposals to redevelop the venue in favour of a more ‘ambitious’ plan.
The original proposal would’ve seen 4,000 seats added to the Anfield Road stand, taking the current total capacity from 54,074 to 58,074.
Planning permission for this development will expire at the end of the month, with the Reds set to focus on a bigger scheme instead.
It is understood their new proposal still includes plans to increase the number of seats in the Anfield Road stand.
Chief Operating Officer Andy Hughes said: “The progress that has been made during ongoing feasibility studies has resulted in us being in a position to allow the outline planning permission to lapse.
“We are committed to working with local residents, planning officials and others as we now focus on the detail behind any proposed redevelopment for Anfield Road.
“Throughout this process we have been clear that our objective is to find the best possible solution for Anfield Road and that remains the case.”
FSG has already spent £110million on Anfield’s main stand, which saw its capacity increased by 9,000 in September 2016.
However, the demand for tickets to watch Liverpool still exceeds the stadium’s current limitations.
Old Trafford remains the largest Premier League stadium with a capacity of 76,000, with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium second, holding 62,062.
Under the new plans, Anfield could overtake West Ham’s London Stadium, which seats 60,000, and Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, a 60,260-seater venue.
