Jurgen Klopp was in disbelief after Liverpool’s opening goal was not awarded to Trent Alexander-Arnold in their 3-0 win over Burnley on Saturday.

The right-back’s cross took a slight deflection off Chris Wood’s back and looped over a luckless Nick Pope.

When told in his post-match press conference that the goal had been taken off Alexander-Arnold, Klopp said: “[You’re] kidding? How is that possible?”

Sky Sports’ Patrick Davison then explained: “It takes a deflection off Chris Wood’s back, I’m not sure if you knew that.”

Klopp sarcastically replied: “Okay, very good.”

Liverpool’s win extended their 100 per cent start to four matches, maintaining their two-point lead over Manchester City.

The result also set a new club record for 13 consecutive league victories.

Klopp said: “I don’t feel proud in the moment but I am happy because this record is really nice.

“We don’t go for these records but this team want to write their own stories and create their own history.

“The 13th game in that series, with the boys showing that attitude, that makes it.

“If someone had asked me four weeks ago if it was possible I would have said, ‘probably not’ so now we have to pray they come back [from internationals] healthy and the most intense period starts in September with five away games and one home game.

“So far, so good.”
