Alexis Sanchez has admitted Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United team selections would puzzle him.

Former United manager Mourinho brought the 30-year-old to the club from Arsenal in January 2018, but soon lost patience with him and his first-team chances did not improve under Solskjaer, who replaced the Portuguese coach in December 2018.

The Chile forward scored just five goals in 45 appearances for United, before sealing a loan move to Inter last week.

Sanchez scored twice for Chile at the Copa America during the summer, but has failed to make any of Solskjaer’s squads this season.

“I think that I’m happy when I play for my national team,” he told BBC Sport.

Adrian Durham says Man United are making a huge mistake letting Alexis Sanchez leave

“I was happy at Manchester United too, but I’ve always said to my friends, ‘I want to play’.

“If they would let me play I’ll do my best. Sometimes I’d play 60 minutes then I wouldn’t play the next game – and I didn’t know why.”

Sanchez was United’s highest paid player on around £500,000-a-week after bonuses and Mourinho would reportedly use his high salary to provoke a reaction from the player.

He is even said to have raised his pay packet once in front of his team-mates, but his attempts to get the best out of him still didn’t work.

Despite his poor form in Manchester, Sanchez explained he has no regrets about his move north.

“I’m very happy I went to Manchester United,” he added.

“I’ve always said that. It’s the club that’s won the most in England.

“When I went to Arsenal it was fantastic – I was happy there – but United were growing at the time, they were buying players to win something.

“I wanted to join them and win everything. I don’t regret going there.”
